PROGRAMS >> PROJECT HOPE

Project HOPE (Health and Outreach with Pesticide Education) began in 2006 with EPA funding to help farmworkers better protect themselves from pesticide exposure in the fields and to assist farm owners to comply with the Worker Protection Standard.

Project HOPE now operates in 17 AFOP member sites in important agricultural regions of the United States.  Farmworkers are being trained by farmworker-focused community based organizations in Washington, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Maine, New York, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Project HOPE is expanding to cover more areas where there are high concentrations of migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

The Health and Safety Team in AFOP’s national office administers Project HOPE, providing training, an EPA-approved curriculum, pesticide safety training supplies, program evaluation and support services.  Guided by the AFOP staff, the trainers enter the fields, potato shacks, and packing warehouses of the farms to deliver an interactive, experiential training on pesticide safety education.

If you are interested in joining Project HOPE, please contact Levy Schroeder, the Health & Safety Director at schroeder@afop.org or call (202) 828-6006 for more information.
